Large original oil painting by Francis Downs, depicting a sun-filled architectural courtyard surrounded by brightly colored buildings, flowering plants and a graceful central tree.
Downs uses a vivid palette of turquoise, coral, yellow, pink and Mediterranean blue to create a cheerful, almost dreamlike interpretation of a European or Mediterranean village square. Architectural details—including tiled roofs, balconies, shuttered windows, arched doorways and overflowing planters—give the composition considerable charm and depth.
The painting is signed “F. Downs” lower right and is presented in an impressive giltwood-style frame with decorative inner molding and a linen liner. A brass FRANCIS DOWNS nameplate is mounted to the frame.
Francis Downs was associated with the Palm Beach/Lake Park, Florida art community, and this painting is a particularly attractive example of his colorful architectural work.
