Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.

The colour is the reason to own it. Saffron is Afghanistan's own crop — the fields around Herat grow some of the finest in the world — and the ground here carries that same deep amber warmth, shifting gently across the field with the natural movement of hand-spun yarn.

Crowned pomegranates filled with fine lattice alternate with large palmettes and open rosettes, carried across the field on slow curving vines that link the whole design without a central medallion. A wide main border of scrolling boteh and blossoms frames the field between narrow guard bands of leaf and vine. Both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with red, blue and gold accents.

Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.

Measuring 96 by 120 inches, this is a standard 8 by 10 that will carry a living room seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or a dining table for eight. The saffron ground brings warmth to rooms with grey walls, dark wood or a north-facing light, and works in traditional, transitional, eclectic and Mediterranean interiors. See less
