Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand, in the Sultanabad and Ziegler tradition.

The wool has a soft lustre and a dense, even pile. The silver ground carries the gentle horizontal movement of hand-spun yarn rather than the flatness of machine colour, and the drawing across it is fine and closely worked.

Crowned pomegranates filled with lattice run in measured rows down the field among palmettes, rosettes and small blossoms, all carried on a delicate curving vine that links the whole design without a central medallion. The framing is unusually elaborate: a wide main border of flowering trees on a lighter camel ground, set between three separate guard bands of small blossoms and running vine. Both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.

Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.

Measuring 108 by 144 inches, this is a true 9 by 12 — a room-size carpet that will hold an entire living room with every piece of furniture on the rug, or a dining table for ten. The cool silver ground works with grey, blue and white schemes where a warmer rug would fight, and suits transitional, contemporary, traditional and coastal interiors. See less
