Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.

The wool has a soft lustre and a dense, even pile. The silver ground carries the gentle horizontal movement of hand-spun yarn rather than the flatness of machine colour, and the pale field gives the drawing room to breathe.

What distinguishes the Ziegler style is scale: rather than a dense allover pattern, a small number of large palmettes and blossoms are set out across an open ground on slow curving vine work, with a crowned lattice-filled palmette at the centre of the field. A wide main border of alternating palmettes and serrated leaves is framed by fine running-arrow guards, and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.

Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.

Measuring 61 by 85 inches, it suits a bedroom under a queen bed, a study, a dining nook for four, or a seating area in a larger room. The pale silver ground makes it unusually easy to place, and the open Ziegler drawing reads as calm rather than busy — it works in transitional, contemporary, traditional and modern farmhouse interiors.
