Original signed oil on canvas by Palm Beach County artist Francis “Duke” Downs (c. 1915–2009), depicting a dramatic floral still life of pink and rose-colored blossoms arranged in a transparent glass vase.
Downs contrasts the softly modeled flowers against a deep chocolate-brown background and warm ochre tabletop, creating a particularly striking composition. Expressive, loose brushwork and areas of heavier paint give the blossoms dimension and movement, while the transparent vase is rendered with quick highlights suggesting reflected light and water.
Signed “F. Downs” at the lower right.
Francis “Duke” Downs was a longtime Palm Beach County artist who maintained a studio at Gallery One in Lake Park, Florida. This painting is a wonderful example of his expressive approach to floral subjects and South Florida decorative painting.
Presented in its vintage giltwood frame with a neutral linen-covered liner and narrow gold inner molding.
