An original Dodie Thayer Lettuce Ware bowl, hand-built in glazed earthenware at her Jupiter, Florida studio and marked on the underside with her painted green oval palm tree mark. Five broad overlapping leaves form the deep well, each with a raised cream midrib and finer branching veins under a mottled apple-green glossy glaze, the ruffled, serrated edges spreading outward at the rim. Thayer pressed real lettuce and cabbage leaves into soft clay to take the veining directly from the living plant, so the botanical detail is true rather than stylized and no two of her pieces are identical.

Thayer (1926–2018), the "Pottery Queen of Palm Beach," made her Lettuce Ware from the early 1960s until the late 1980s, selling only through Palm Beach and New York shops; her collectors included the Duchess of Windsor, C.Z. Guest, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Brooke Astor and the Sinatras, and the 2015 Dodie Thayer for Tory Burch collection renewed the following for her originals. The bowl is as usable as it is sculptural — salads and fruit by day, a centerpiece the rest of the time.
