An original Dodie Thayer Lettuce Ware tureen with its cover and conforming stand, hand-built in glazed earthenware in Jupiter, Florida and dated February 1987. The three pieces build a complete head of lettuce: overlapping veined leaves rise to the tureen’s ruffled rim, the cover furls inward like the inner leaves of the head, and the stand spreads five outer leaves around it, each with a raised cream midrib. The tureen is signed and dated in green script “Dodie Thayer / Jupiter, Fla., Feb ’87,” and the stand carries her painted palm tree mark.

The covered tureen was the form Thayer most enjoyed making and is the piece her collectors chase — her ware was carried by a handful of Palm Beach and New York shops and collected by the Duchess of Windsor, C.Z. Guest, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Brooke Astor, and the Sinatras, and the 2015 Dodie Thayer for Tory Burch collection renewed its following. Filled with hydrangeas or serving chilled soup, it anchors a table in the Palm Beach manner.
