Here is a beautiful set of four 1931 Royal Cauldon transferware plates depicting historic scenes from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Each plate features a different view rendered in the prettiest rose-pink transfer on a warm cream ground.
The four scenes include The Administration Building, The Third Academy Building, The Town from the Squamscott River, and The Yard, with each view identified on the reverse. The borders are especially wonderful, with softly scalloped edges and an incredibly intricate allover pattern of delicate vines, tiny flowers and bees. At the top of each plate is a beautiful crest detailed with two lions, while architectural vignettes and the Phillips Exeter Academy seal punctuate the remaining border. There is so much to discover in the decoration and I adore the unique pink-and-cream palette, which makes these extra special.
Made in England by Royal Cauldon for Jones, McDuffee & Stratton of Boston, the plates are wonderfully detailed and make such a charming collection displayed together. Fantastic displayed on a wall or grouped in a cabinet.
