This 81.5-inch door (94 inches including its extended pivot post) is a monumental two-plank Yoruba piece, carved in the Osi-Ilorin … Read more This 81.5-inch door (94 inches including its extended pivot post) is a monumental two-plank Yoruba piece, carved in the Osi-Ilorin workshop tradition of southwestern Nigeria, hand-hewn from two thick vertical hardwood slabs joined by three scalloped horizontal cleats on the reverse. The face is organized into a dense grid of narrative registers, separated by braided rope-twist borders, packed with small carved figures telling a layered story of court and community life: mounted equestrian figures, court elders and praise singers, kneeling devotees, wrestling and armed figures, and imagery reflecting colonial-era contact, European-style dress, firearms, and an early wheeled vehicle among the traditional court scenes. This genre of narrative door, blending palace life with the arrival of colonial influence, is associated with named historical Yoruba carving workshops from this region. The patina is a warm honey-oak to light amber tone with softened, well-handled carving edges throughout. At nearly 7 feet tall and just under 4 feet wide, this is an architectural-scale piece with real museum presence, suited to a great room, a stairwell, or any space with the height to let its full narrative program be read from a distance and studied up close.
