It seamlessly merges scientific model design with functional home decor. This table is highly characteristic of the work of Maison Jansen or Maison Baguès, two premier French interior design firms renowned for their luxury, neoclassical- and celestial-themed metal furniture.

STYLE: It was manufactured in Paris, France during the 1950s or 1960s. This era saw a major revival of interest in 18th-century scientific instruments reimagined as high-end Hollywood Regency and French Neoclassical decor. It blends the two, relying heavily on sleek metalwork, classical symmetry and a striking contrast between dark structural metals and bright, polished accents to create a sense of curated luxury.

MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION: The main body and legs are made of patinated iron and wrought steel. It shows an intentionally aged, slightly pitted finish that mimics antique scientific brass and ironwork. The decorative finials, vertical rod caps and the foot-mount studs are made of cast brass.
The upper ring acts as a structural collar designed to hold a thick, circular clear glass tabletop. The lower tier contains the nested, multi-axis polished steel armillary sphere.

SYMBOLISM: The lower shelf is a stylized interpretation of an armillary sphere (or spherical astrolabe), an ancient astronomical instrument used to model the heavens. The center orb represents the Earth or the Sun, symbolizing the anchor of the universe. The interlocking rings represent the great circles of the heavens, historically corresponding to the celestial equator, the ecliptic (the path of the sun), and the meridian lines. Lastly, the base medallion on the lowest structural stretcher is cut into a beautiful six-lobed rosette or hexagram. Historically, this geometric motif represents the "Flower of Life" or a compass rose, symbolizing cosmic order, direction, and balance. And you thought it was just a place to set your Aperol spritz.
