STYLE & STRUCTURE: The bent willow frame of this piece is an established furniture form popularized by Appalachian and Adirondack artisans since the late 19th century. Standard bent willow chaises traditionally feature a woven slatted wood seat and back constructed completely out of thinner willow switches. In this case, the base consists of rigid structural logs held together with heavy, exposed antique flat-head iron nails. Secondary bracing twigs run in cross patterns under the frame to keep the lightweight willow framework from shifting under a sitter’s weight. The backrest features a spectacular "sunburst" radiating pattern constructed from alternating straight willow branches. The perimeter is reinforced with multiple parallel bands of steam-bent willow arches forming a deep cradle.

UPHOLSTERY: The chaise is covered in a heavy but pliable, upholstery quality velvet mohair that drapes lusciously around the curves of the piece. Fully deep-padded, overstuffed upholstery built directly into a bent twig chassis is exceedingly rare. Usually, rustic willow loungers rely on removable flat tie-on cushions. Integrating an interior spring-and-burlap or dense foam core upholstered deck with an attached fabric dust skirt is a premium, custom interior-decorator upgrade. It was likely custom commissioned to bring the rustic, informal outdoor Adirondack aesthetic into a luxury cabin living room, sunroom or master bedroom.
