Maimana, in Faryab province, is the … Read more A vintage handwoven Maimana kilim from northern Afghanistan, overdyed in a deep coral rust. Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country, and this piece has been given a single-colour dye bath in the way that has become its own tradition in the trade — an older flatweave brought back as one saturated field of colour.

The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool with no pile. Because the overdye covers the whole rug evenly, the original geometry now reads through shifts of tone rather than contrasts of colour, so the surface behaves almost like a textured solid from standing height and resolves into pattern up close.

Beneath the dye the design is a full lattice of stepped diamonds, each framed in hooked keys and sawtooth outlines with a small star at its centre, running edge to edge across the field. The borders carry rows of small octagons, triangles and hooked motifs in the same coral family, closing at each end in banded plain weave and the original fringe.

The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. The weave is even across the field, the selvedges and end finishes are intact, and the fringe is original.

Measuring 77 by 119 inches, this is a standard room size that will hold a living room seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or a dining table for six. The single warm coral works as a colour statement in a quiet room, and sits well in bohemian, eclectic and warm modern interiors. See less
