Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country.

The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool with no pile. The ground shifts gently between olive, taupe and warm brown across the length — abrash, the natural variation between batches of hand-spun yarn.

The field carries an allover lattice of stepped crosses and small diamonds in rose, blush and brown, densest through the centre and opening out toward the ends. A stepped sawtooth border in rose frames the field on all four sides, with rows of rose triangles across each end, closing in brown plain weave and the original wool fringe. Small crosses in bright red and purple appear at intervals in the field, and a line of red and purple stitching runs across the width near one end.

The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. The selvedges and end finishes are intact and the fringe is original.

Measuring 38 by 76 inches, it suits an entry, a hallway, a kitchen, the side of a bed, or a small study, and layers well over a larger jute or sisal rug. The soft rose and brown palette is warm and quiet, and works in bohemian, southwestern and warm modern interiors. See less
