Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country.

The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool with no pile. The colours are close and warm, with gentle shifts in tone across the ground from abrash, the natural variation between batches of hand-spun yarn, and small flecks of rose used as accents through the borders.

The centre of the rug carries a large diamond lattice built from rows of small stepped diamonds in camel, blue-grey, apricot and ivory, with two ivory crosses marking the vertical axis. Panels of hooked square medallions run down each side and across both ends, and a band of paired leaf forms in apricot on chocolate frames the whole. Each end finishes in a striped skirt of chocolate, apricot and camel plain weave with a full ivory fringe.

The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. The weave is even across the field, the selvedges and end finishes are intact, and the fringe is original and complete. Clean and odour free.

Measuring 41 by 78 inches, it suits a hallway, an entry, a kitchen, the side of a bed, or a small study. It also layers well over a larger jute or sisal rug. The warm brown palette with its camel and blue is easy to place and works in bohemian, southwestern and warm modern interiors. See less
