Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country.

The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool on a natural wool warp, with no pile. The colour is soft and close in tone throughout, with gentle shifts across the ground from abrash, the natural variation between batches of hand-spun yarn.

Rather than a central medallion, the field carries an allover lattice of small stepped diamonds and hooked squares in taupe, brown and ivory, scattered with tiny crosses and dots. It is framed by an unusually deep sequence of borders: a chocolate band of ivory eight-petal rosettes, a band of hooked figures, a running scroll wave, fine comb stripes and a stepped outer guard. The rug closes at each end in a brown plain-weave header with the original wool fringe.

The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. The weave is even across the field, the selvedges and end finishes are intact, and the fringe is original. Clean and odour free.

Measuring 97 by 175 inches, this is a genuine oversize carpet for a large living room with all furniture on the rug, or a long dining table for twelve. The near-neutral mushroom palette is exceptionally easy to live with, and the dense allover pattern reads as texture from standing height rather than as a motif, which makes it forgiving under strong furniture.
