Maimana, … Read more A handwoven Maimana kilim from northern Afghanistan in a saturated rose pink, worked with navy, mustard, chocolate and ivory. Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country, and the strength of colour here is unusual — most kilims that reach this market have softened considerably.

The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool with no pile, on a blue-grey wool warp. The rose ground carries the gentle tonal shifts of abrash, the natural variation between batches of hand-spun yarn, and the colour holds nearly as strongly on the reverse as on the face.

A central panel runs the length of the rug with a column of large stepped diamonds, each outlined in ivory and brown and filled with hooked scroll motifs. The panel is flanked by vertical bands of small rosettes and candelabra figures in navy, mustard and pink, separated by narrow navy comb stripes that run the full length. A wide chocolate border with a running ivory scroll frames the whole, closing at each end in banded stripes and the original blue-grey fringe.

The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. Selvedges and end finishes are intact and the fringe is original and complete. [CHECK AND DESCRIBE: any spots, thin areas, stains or repairs, with location and size.]
