Rather than a single open field, the design works inward through four nested frames, each one filled with its own vocabulary of small motifs.

The weave is flat, supple and reversible, hand-spun wool on wool with no pile. The ground is a warm sand-camel that shifts gently in tone across the width — abrash, the natural variation between batches of hand-spun yarn — set against dark chocolate brown, grey-mauve and small accents of ivory.

At the centre sits a large serrated diamond panel worked in stepped brown and grey outlines around a pale medallion. The bands that surround it carry eight-pointed star rosettes, hooked ram's horn motifs, small octagons and stepped triangles, separated by narrow chocolate borders with a running ivory dash. The outermost band closes in a bold running zigzag, finished at each end with a dark plain-weave header and the original fringe.

The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. Selvedges and end finishes are intact, the fringe is original, and the weave is even across the field. Measuring 99 by 120 inches, this is a true room-size rug: it will hold a full living room seating group with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or sit under a dining table for eight. The muted, near-neutral palette works in warm minimalist, organic modern and southwestern interiors, and is quiet enough to live under strong furniture. See less
