This elegant … Read more Vintage Japanese woodblock print “Camellia” by Kyoto artist Nisaburo Ito (1905–2001), published by Uchida Art Co., circa 1960s–1970s. This elegant kachō-e, or flower-and-bird genre composition, depicts a flowering camellia branch with variegated red-and-white blossoms, deep green foliage and a partially opened bud.

Ito studied at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting and later under noted Nihonga painter Tsuchida Bakusen. He became particularly associated with Kyoto publisher Uchida, producing both landscape and botanical woodblock designs.

The print bears Ito's red seal at lower left together with the publisher's mark. The original bilingual Uchida Art Co. label remains with the piece and identifies it as Woodblock Print I-254, “Camellia,” originated by Nisaburo Ito. Presented under glass with a wide neutral mat in a dark wood frame.
