This antique table from Portugal, exhibiting strong Baroque and Iberian influences, has been crafted in rich rosewood with exceptional attention to detail. The rectangular-shaped top (measuring approximately 54.25 inches wide by 30 inches deep) is framed by a boldly carved rope-twist molded edge and slightly overhangs the apron below which houses three drawers set along the frieze, each with raised rectangular paneled fronts framed by finely carved bead molding. The drawers retain their original brass escutcheons and hardware, with intricate pierced designs that add a decorative appeal. Similar "faux" drawers continue the look at either side. A double banding of carved rope-twist molding outlines the lower edge of the apron. The table is presented on six heavily turned baluster legs, displaying dramatic ring-turnings and robust sculptural forms, supported by an elaborately turned H-form stretcher system, creating visual rhythm while providing structural stability. Decorative brass mounts accent the leg corners just about the feet. The rosewood has developed a deep, lustrous patina over centuries, highlighting the wood's rich chocolate-brown coloration with subtle reddish undertones and natural grain variation. There are age-appropriate scratches and surface wear, consistent with the table's antiquity and centuries of use, all of which contribute to its authentic character and patina. Please note that there is a crack at the backside at top trim, and a spindle on one of the stretchers is missing a piece. This late 18th century Portuguese rosewood table, distinguished by its richly turned elements, deep patina, and finely detailed ornamentation, make it an exceptionally handsome and versatile console table.
