These sweeping curvilinear ornaments introduce a distinctly Baroque character, their exaggerated scale contrasting dramatically with the straight lines and geometric panels below. The opposing scrolls also create a sense of movement across the façade and contribute greatly to the vanity's theatrical personality.

At the center, the design becomes increasingly architectural. The recessed central drawer is framed by deeply fluted or reeded vertical elements resembling stylized pilasters. Beneath it, the broad mirrored kneehole panel reflects light while visually extending the depth of the piece. The two pedestals terminate in contrasting dark plinth bases, which ground the composition and provide a strong counterpoint to the luminous, distressed surfaces above.

The vanity is appropriately described as attributed to Serge Roche, rather than definitively identified as his work in the absence of documentary evidence, a signature, or established provenance. Its extravagant scrollwork, antiqued reflective surfaces, architectural modeling, and almost surreal reinterpretation of historical ornament are strongly sympathetic to the decorative language for which Roche became celebrated.

Serge Roche (1898–1988) was an important French decorator and designer whose highly individual work occupied a fascinating position between the great French decorative traditions and twentieth-century modernism. He became especially renowned for imaginative mirrors, consoles, lighting, decorative objects, and sculptural furnishings, often employing plaster, mirrored glass, and other materials to reinterpret Baroque and Neoclassical ornament. Rather than simply reproducing historical designs, Roche enlarged, abstracted, and exaggerated classical architectural elements—scrolls, shells, columns, fluting, foliage, and moldings—to create objects of striking modernity. His dramatic furniture and mirrors were particularly suited to the glamorous international interiors of the mid-twentieth century.
