1983 John Richard Fox Abstract Mixed Media Painting, Newly Frarmed
Offered for sale is a 1983 John Richard Fox mixed media abstract painting on paper. The work is signed and dated, and it has been newly framed.
John Richard Fox (Canadian, 1927–2008) was born in Montreal. Fox was a highly influential Canadian modernist painter, printmaker, and educator associated with the post-war developments of abstract art in Canada. Fox studied under the legendary Canadian artist Goodridge Roberts at the Art Association of Montreal before moving to Europe in the early 1950s. He spent formative time in Paris, Florence, and the United Kingdom, where he was exposed to European modernism and Italian fresco paintings—influences that permanently shaped his unique approach to light and spatial structure. Stylistic Evolution: Fox's career is marked by fluid transitions between figuration and pure abstraction.
1983 was a pivotal transition year for the Canadian abstract colorist, during which he created highly sought-after mixed-media works on canvas and paper. These pieces are defined by the use of acrylic, charcoal, oil paint, and collage elements. The artistic significance of Fox’s 1983 works was that this was his transition period: His 1983 pieces began featuring undefined, spontaneous charcoal markings laid over or colliding with thick layers of paint.
