The item in the image is a vintage Chinese cricket cage, meticulously hand-carved from ox bone or cow bone. Historically popular in China during early antiquity and peaking during dynasties like the Tang and Qing, these miniature cages were used to temporarily house pet crickets. Crickets were highly valued in Chinese culture for their "singing" abilities and as symbols of good luck, happiness, and longevity.
Carved from natural ox or cow bone, featuring a smooth, off-white finish. The base features detailed, etched, or relief-carved floral motifs and traditional patterns with darkened ink accents to make the design. It includes thin, vertical bone bars, tiny internal bone feeding bowls, and integrated sliding doors on both sides designed to securely contain the insects while allowing access.
