Constructed of formed … Read more A wonderfully unusual vintage Italian hand-painted metal drum stool or occasional table, dating to the mid-20th century.

Constructed of formed metal, the piece is decorated throughout in a colorful trompe-l’œil patchwork design composed of individually painted panels in warm orange, ochre, green, cream and brown tones. Floral, foliate, geometric and abstract patterns are separated by hand-painted faux stitching, creating the appearance of a whimsical patchwork textile. The central drum is finished with a bold harlequin diamond motif, while contrasting green, orange and dark brown bands define the sculptural profile.

The combination of playful decoration and compact proportions gives the piece a distinctly Italian postwar character. At approximately 17 inches in diameter, it can function beautifully as a low stool, occasional table, plant stand or purely decorative accent.

Marked Made in Italy to the underside.

The original painted surface has been intentionally preserved and displays considerable age-related character, including scratches, rubbing, scattered paint loss, surface wear and oxidation, particularly along the top and edges. These areas are shown clearly in the photographs and have not been cosmetically restored or concealed. The resulting patina contributes to the authentic vintage appearance of the piece.

A distinctive and increasingly difficult-to-find example of mid-century Italian decorative design with an especially charming folk-art sensibility.
