Rich in sporting character and finely detailed throughout, this pair of antique hunting panels reflects the rustic decorative tradition associated with Black Forest interiors. Crafted in France circa 1890, each rectangular scene is executed in repoussé brass, with the metal worked from the reverse to create a deeply embossed composition of game animals set within wooded landscapes.
The first panel, titled “Les Cerfs,” depicts a stag and doe running through a mountainous countryside. The stag’s prominent antlers, textured coat, surrounding foliage, distant hills, and tree-lined landscape are rendered with impressive depth and movement.
The companion panel, titled “Les Sangliers,” portrays a group of wild boars charging through a dense forest clearing. Their bristled coats, tusks, muscular forms, and animated expressions are contrasted against a richly worked woodland background filled with tree trunks, exposed roots, grasses, and undergrowth.
Both compositions retain a warm golden-brown patina with darker recessed areas that enhance the sculptural relief and bring out the finely worked details. The reverse sides clearly reveal the repoussé construction, with the outlines of the animals and landscapes visible from behind.
Each panel is presented in a handsome period frame combining richly figured burl wood with contrasting ebonized molding. Applied metal plaques along the lower rails identify the subjects as “LES CERFS” and “LES SANGLIERS.” The woodland hunting subjects, game animals, and rustic presentation place the pair firmly within the Black Forest decorative tradition, while the French titles and workmanship support a French origin.
Substantial and highly decorative, this matched pair would make a striking addition to a library, study, game room, lodge, country house, or hunting-themed interior.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor wear and surface variations to the brass and frames consistent with age.
