Tape looms were used to weave narrow, sturdy strips of fabric called "tapes" before the invention of zippers, snaps, Velcro, or elastic. They were usually small and large examples like this one are rare. We've only seen one other cruder one the wild.
Note that each of the 5 individual tape loom panels are carved then assembled in a beautifully hand made frame. It's truly stunning and the whole piece has gained a gorgeous patina over all these years. Today it'll make a beautiful decorative element in a house or retail setting. It's good old Americana craftsmanship.
