Crafted in Belgium circa 1890, the patinated bronze depicts the biblical heroine Judith as a poised and contemplative young woman, with long flowing hair, an elaborate jeweled headband, and richly modeled drapery wrapped around her shoulders and torso.

Hambresin contrasts the smooth, serene modeling of the face and neck with the more energetic treatment of the cascading hair, textile folds, jeweled headpiece, and decorative belt. The sculpture is equally detailed from the reverse, where the headband is tied beneath the hair and the garment is finished with a large ornamental buckle. The figure rests on an integral square bronze base and retains a rich dark brown patina with subtle areas of verdigris and oxidation that enhance the depth and character of the surface.

The bronze is signed “A. Hambresin” and further inscribed “Cie des Bronzes, cire perdue, Bruxelles,” documenting its casting by the Compagnie des Bronzes in Brussels using the traditional lost-wax, or cire perdue, process. The prestigious Belgian foundry was known for producing finely detailed bronze sculpture, and the lost-wax technique allowed the sculptor’s modeling and surface detail to be faithfully preserved.

Albert Hambresin, also recorded as Albrecht Hambresin, was born in Willebroek, Belgium, in 1850 and died in Genval in 1937. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and became known for portrait busts, figures, and genre subjects. Hambresin is listed in Benezit as a Belgian sculptor, and documented works include Le Rameau, a bronze recorded in Antwerp, and Veilleur de Nuit.

A refined example of late 19th-century Belgian figurative sculpture, this substantial 58-pound bronze would make a dramatic focal point on a pedestal, console, library table, or mantel in a traditional or collected interior.

Excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor surface wear consistent with age.
