Exceptional large antique copper processing trough dating to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1860–1900. Measuring an impressive 43 inches long, the vessel is hand-fabricated from sheet copper with folded and soldered seams, a reinforced rolled rim, and substantial riveted carrying handles at both ends.
The unusual long, narrow and shallow form indicates that this was originally a working vessel rather than a decorative planter. Its watertight construction, unlined copper interior, lack of a drain, and opposing carrying handles suggest that it was designed to receive, cool, hold, or transport a liquid or semi-liquid product as part of an agricultural, commercial, or food-processing operation.
The trough was acquired in South Louisiana's historic sugar-cane region. Period sugar-making literature documents shallow copper pans, troughs, coolers, and receiving vessels used for handling syrup, molasses, and crystallizing sugar during the 19th century. While its exact original function has not been definitively identified, its form and construction are consistent with an auxiliary processing or receiving vessel, and a connection to the historic sugar or syrup industry is possible.
Of particular interest are the substantial handles at both ends, each formed from copper strap and secured with large rivets. Their placement suggests that the vessel was intended to be lifted and carried level, likely by two workers when loaded.
The copper retains a remarkable untouched surface developed through generations of use, with deep brown, russet, green and blue-green verdigris throughout. The interior exhibits especially rich oxidation and surface variation, while the underside retains the dark, naturally aged surface of the original copper.
A striking example of 19th-century utilitarian craftsmanship, the trough has tremendous sculptural presence at 43 inches long. Today it would make an exceptional decorative centerpiece, architectural accent, dried-floral vessel, or display piece in a historic, rustic, industrial, farmhouse, or collected interior.

The copper retains its original unpolished patina with extensive natural verdigris, oxidation, discoloration, scratches, small dents, surface irregularities, and accumulated wear throughout. The folded and soldered seams, riveted handle attachments, and other construction details remain visible and contribute to the historic character of the piece. Oxidation and residue are particularly evident along the interior seams and around the rivets and handle attachments. The vessel has intentionally not been polished or restored, preserving its historic surface and naturally developed patina. No representation is made that the vessel is presently watertight or suitable for food use.
