Match strikers such as this were used primarily during the Belle Epoque (late 19th - 1914). They were used to store and light matches to light alcohol-soaked sugar cubes over slotted spoons, melting the sugar into the absinthe in the tray on the bottom. Many strikers bore the brand names of the liquor brands that gave the strikers to bars and night clubs. When absinthe was banned in 1915, most of these items were abandoned. Over time, they have proven to be useful for smoking and other household purposes and some with special marks, colors or shapes have become very collectible. For modern use, be sure to use "Strike Anywhere" matches which allows the match to ignite on the rough porcelain. This substantial smoking or absinthe accessory measures 5 1/2" in diameter at the bottom, is 3 1/4" tall and weighs 15 oz. No maker's mark or surface decoration. A nice accessory for a a smoker, lighting candles or fireplaces or use on a bar cart, desk or vanity for toothpicks, paper clips or cotton swabs. See less
