Guenot, a chemist and preparer located at 38 Rue des Écoles in Le Creusot, Saône-et-Loire, between 1890 and 1905. Based on the wording of the address and the use of the title “Chimiste,” it is likely that this was not a large industrial chemical company, but rather a pharmacist-chemist or pharmaceutical apothecary. In France, between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, the term chimiste was commonly used to describe pharmacists, chemical preparers, and merchants dealing in pharmaceutical and chemical products, often operating small laboratories attached to their shops. At the time, Le Creusot was an important industrial center closely associated with the Schneider steelworks and manufacturing facilities. Within this environment, numerous small chemical and pharmaceutical laboratories supplied products for medical, industrial, and domestic use. The two compositions depict charming children set within idyllic pastoral landscapes filled with wildflowers, ripened grain, and romantic foliage. Their imagery belongs to the popular “Flower Children” tradition, highly appreciated during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The sweetness of the expressions, the delicate rendering of the faces, and the soft, luminous palette perfectly reflect the decorative taste of late 19th-century France, when childhood imagery symbolized innocence, purity, and harmony with nature.
