A hard-to-find and wonderfully whimsical example of Portuguese Palissy-style majolica, this large, lidded serving tureen features a vivid red crab perched atop the lid, framed by clam shell handles and raised on four mussel-shaped feet. The olive green ground is richly textured with seaweed-like foliage, creating an exceptionally charming trompe l’oeil effect inspired by the naturalistic ceramics of Bernard Palissy.

Marked on the underside “Made in Portugal,” 921 E and Saks Fifth Avenue, indicating its original upscale retailer.
