Attributed to the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this unusual small carved wooden container features exceptionally intricate geometric decoration inspired by Kuba textile and basketry designs. The surface is extensively hand-carved with interlocking diamond, chevron, zigzag and linear motifs. The dark, naturally aged patina and extensive wear are consistent with prolonged handling and use.
