This rare hand-colored engraving is "Montserrat N.E. 3 Miles" from Captain William S. Andrews’ notable mid-19th-century work, Andrews' Illustrations of the West Indies (1855). This is a framed and matted illustration from his book. The frame is silver toned metal, wired, and ready to display. There is glass in the frame covering the art. Measurements in frame are 31.5” W x 8.5” H x .75” D.
It is very rare to find the book however occasionally surviving pieces of art from the book surface. This is a very interesting, rare piece of art with a tragic recent history and a lovely provenance.

• Artist: Captain William S. Andrews (Royal Navy). The author was a Captain in the Royal Navy, a mathematician as well as author of this fine book.
• Source: Illustrations of the West Indies, published in two volumes in 1855 by Day and Son.
Subject: A panoramic view of the island of Montserrat from three miles northeast, showing the town of Plymouth before its 20th-century volcanic destruction.

Provenance:
Inscription on the back reads: To Professor Duncan Munro: in appreciation for your dedicated work to past, present, and future aspiring physicians. Many Thanks, the Students of A.U.C, 31ª July, 1992.
There is also an inscription on the back that reads: By W.S. Andrews; 1860.
This is the correct artist name however it is my understanding the date is incorrect as this was made in 1855.

The American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine was originally founded and headquartered on the island of Montserrat in 1978.
• Evacuation & Relocation: The university was forced to evacuate its campus in 1995 when the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted, burying much of the southern half of the island and rendering the area uninhabitable.
• Current Status: Following the eruption,
AUC relocated its main academic campus to Sint Maarten, where it operates today.
The original Montserrat campus was subsequently destroyed by a volcanic pyroclastic flow in 1997.

Provenance: I purchased this engraving from the estate of Duncan Monro in Charleston, SC.
Duncan Robertson Munro (1942 - 2026):
Duncan was born in 1942 to Duncan and Mary Munro in Glasgow, Scotland. He was always interested in science and completed a Higher National Diploma at Paisley College, Glasgow. At the time, Duncan was one of a few people on the planet who knew how to operate an electron microscope and was invited to the University of Michigan to set
up a new electron microscopy laboratory.
After completion, he stayed in Ann Arbor to complete a Masters and then a PhD in human physiology. Duncan went on to do postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School. He also taught at Northeastern University in Boston. In 1984, an interesting offer to teach offshore at the Medical School of the Caribbean came about. Duncan and Jane embarked on a wondertul adventure on the island of Montserrat. After eight years of tropical bliss and daily golf matches, Duncan got island fever, and he and his wife looked for someplace stateside.
Eventually, Duncan and Jane settled in Charleston, SC and both got jobs at the College of Charleston. Duncan taught human physiology. See less
