Charles Edward Proctor’s meticulously conceived still life presents a violin, bow, and yellow music folio arranged against a wall of weathered vertical boards. The violin establishes the composition’s principal axis, while the slender diagonal of the bow introduces a measured counterpoint to its upright form. Partially obscured behind the instrument, the folio—inscribed *Études Violin* and accompanied by a projecting passage of musical notation—provides a luminous field of ochre yellow amid the restrained palette of olive green, gray, umber, and warm reddish brown.

The painting belongs to the distinctly American tradition of late nineteenth-century trompe-l’œil, in which familiar objects are rendered with sufficient precision to challenge the boundary between painted representation and tangible reality. Proctor carefully differentiates the violin’s polished wooden body, the slender strings and fittings, the curling pages of the music, and the cracked, abraded surfaces of the background boards. Painted knots, fissures, nail marks, peeling pigment, and irregular grain transform the ostensibly humble wall into an active pictorial surface.
