Each urn-form pharmacy jar is painted in the Renaissance-revival maiolica tradition, with domed covers, bold yellow banding, green and yellow floral sprays, blue scrolling tendrils, square ceramic plinth bases, and later black display bases. The bodies are inscribed in large Gothic blackletter; one appears to read “Detribus…” or a related Latin-style apothecary inscription, while the companion appears to read “Ungkarum,” likely intended to evoke “Unguentum,” the Latin term for an ointment, unguent, or medicinal salve. Such labeled jars recall historic pharmacy vessels used to identify and store medicinal preparations, herbs, compounds, and ointment bases. The present pair retains strong decorative apothecary character while functioning as newly wired table lamps.
