Mid-Century Italian 1950s Signed Landscape Painting by Bruno Avesani
This view by Bruno Avesani, a painter and scholar from Verona, captures an evocative rural scene characterised by a large stone arch overgrown with vegetation. The work depicts a landscape typical of the Verona or Lake Garda areas, regions which the artist explored in depth during his historical research.
This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition.
Our company has been present on this platform for many years, with more than 100 sales made and just as many excellent reviews received that you can under our Furniture account.
The composition is dominated by a central perspective that guides the eye through a series of arches, creating a sense of depth and contemplative stillness. In this rare work by Bruno Avesani, one can observe a skilful use of brushstrokes to render the various surfaces: shorter, denser strokes for the climbing foliage above the arch and broader, more nuanced brushstrokes for the sky and the road.
The colour palette of this evocative painting is dominated by warm earth tones and shades of pink for the buildings, contrasting with the intense green of the vegetation and the soft, almost milky blue of the sky.
This colour scheme evokes soft, diffused afternoon light.
On the left, a wooden fence and a small dark window add details of everyday rural life.
In the bottom right-hand corner is the artist’s signature, ‘Bruno Avesani’, a distinctive feature that confirms the work’s authenticity.
The work reflects Avesani’s sensitivity towards the ‘lived landscape’, transforming a simple architectural feature into a poetic testament to local history
The painting is sold without frame, available on demand.
Bruno Avesani (1906–1989) was a Veronese painter, sculptor and set designer, famous for creating the ‘Talking Christ’ in the Don Camillo films and for his work as a set designer and artistic director on international film productions.
In 1952, Avesani carved the famous Christ figure, with whom the actor Fernandel conversed, from Swiss stone pine.
He created five interchangeable faces to convey the different moods called for by the script, although only one has survived to this day.
Once filming was complete, the producer Angelo Rizzoli donated the crucifix to the church of Santa Maria Nascente in Brescello (Reggio Emilia), where it can still be admired today in a side chapel. As well as being a painter, he worked as a set designer, interior designer and art director on numerous successful films.
Among his best-known films are *Il ragazzo sul delfino* (1957) starring Sophia Loren, *Delitto in pieno sole* (1960) and John Huston’s *Riflessi in un occhio d’oro* (1967).
