Stephen W. Kuzma Contemporary Signed Landscape of Rome Painting
This wonderful 1990 oil on canvas by American artist Stephen W. Kuzma (1933–2023) is a panoramic view of Rome, likely captured from the elevated vantage point of the Pincio.
The work is built on a refined balance between lush Mediterranean nature and the city’s historic architecture: in its foreground a vibrant "scenic frame" dominated by deep green masses, including characteristic pine trees and palms.
In the background he cityscape unfolds with terraces, bell towers, and residential buildings, culminating in the distant but recognizable silhouette of St. Peter's Basilica dome.
The artwork bears the signature ‘Kuzma ’90’ in the bottom right-hand corner, which allows it to be dated to 1990.
On the reverse is a handwritten inscription by the artist with a dedication, part of which is legible as: “for John & Pepe with many thanks & affection – Steve ’90”.
This inscription lends the painting a personal character and attests to the work’s circulation within a private context.
To create this wonderfull atmosphere, Kuzma uses a broad, airy vision where the sky and vegetation dominate, making the city appear almost as a "suspended presence" filtered by light and distance.
Kuzma is often classified as an important contemporary American Impressionist.
The rushwork is almost soft and fluid rather than rigid.
He avoids topographical precision in favor of capturing a "visual and emotional experience". Regarding the colour palette, it's a luminous interplay of deep greens, clear blues, warm yellows, and rosy tones, which together evoke the specific Mediterranean light of Rome.
He frequently employed a unique method of layering different media—sometimes including watercolor, oil, and pastel—to create a sculptural, life-like glow.
This particular piece reflects Kuzma’s late-career focus on nature and "divine inspiration," moving away from his earlier professional work as a sports illustrator for major outlets like The New York Times and Sports Illustrated.
This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection and is beautified by an impressive original frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition.

Steve Kuzma is a full-time artist, illustrator, and teacher with more than 30 years of professional experience. He has sold his paintings all over the United States and internationally, as his style of impressions blended with the avant-garde layering techniques is unique and done in a very recognizable way. Steve has a strong attachment to nature and spirituality with his luminous, soulful painting, as can be seen in the watercolor, pastel, and water-mixable oils he paints relationships with the landscape.
Steve is a graduate with honors from the Parsons School of Design and also studied in Italy and France on some of the most prestigious fellowships. His works vary vastly in terms of the genre he uses, as they could be landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and sporting illustrations; regardless, the message of his work is humanistic and jovial.
Steve enhances his prints on fine art canvas and paper by hand embellishment, glazing, and pastel-infusion. His studio is located at three sites, his gallery at the Noyes Arts Garage in Atlantic City, among others.
Wanting to make your house more comfortable, surprise a beloved one, or create something unique, Steve is ready to provide individual consultations. Explore his online gallery and bring home art that truly touches the soul.
