Add a touch of early 20th-century sophistication and intimate history to your collection with this rare, original etching by Alaska-born artist Henry Brewerton Quinan.
Titled "Rachel," this striking piece is a deeply personal portrait depicting the artist’s wife.
Notably, the composition features beautifully rendered Alaskan indigenous tribal art on the wall next to the sitter—a deliberate and poignant nod to Quinan’s birthplace of Sitka, Alaska.
This artwork is believed to have been created during his tenure in New York, possibly for Woman's Home Companion.
Henry Brewerton Quinan (American, 1876–1948)

Henry Brewerton Quinan boasts an impressive pedigree spanning the global art capitals of the early 1900s: Born in Sitka, Alaska in 1876. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1897 before moving to Europe. He spent years in Paris studying at the prestigious Académie Julian under the master Jean-Paul Laurens. He successfully exhibited at the historic Paris Salon in 1904. By the 1920s, he settled in New York City, serving as the influential Art Editor for Woman's Home Companion until 1940.
The outer border of the etching is in poor condition with foxing and toning and various tears at the extreme edges. The print itself is in very nice antique condition. The etched plate impression remains crisp, dark, and beautifully preserved.
The paper is naturally aged and distressed, showing ample antique foxing and character. Crucially, this foxing is located outside of the plate marks, making it exceptionally well-suited for professional matting and framing. The paper is in need of restoration or archival framing.
Please review all high-resolution images closely to appreciate the authentic vintage patina of this piece.
