Vintage Japanese Byobu of four hand painted ink panels on Gold Foil, of what appears to be "Mount Penglai Morning Clouds." Artists Hanko Seal shows two fish side by side on the leftmost of the screens; and ink signed in Kanji on the Showa era piece.
Mount Penglai is from Chinese Mythology, often shown in Japanese art; as the Island of Immortals. The Mountain is shown in Spring with blooming cherry trees, cranes flying and landing in adjacent pine trees. A person wearing blue and white is walking towards another person; and approaching a bridge over a river, with pagodas in the background.
The metal gold colored screen frame measures 72" x 36" inches in total and is bordered in a textured silk fabric. The corners have protective gold tone metal hardware with floral cutouts; and four gold or brass hanging hardware pieces are at the top of each screen. The back of the screen shows a sticker marked with the company name - which was 1960s or later: "Original Work of Art XH-58, Uchida Art Co. Ltd. Made in Japan."
