A Fascinating Window into Early 19th-Century Pennsylvania Life
Step back in time to March 8, 1837, with this remarkably preserved, entirely hand-penned estate sale notice from Robeson Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. This isn't just a document; it’s a vivid snapshot of early American rural life, listing everything from livestock to the literal gears of a local mill.
The most compelling feature of this document is the strict final warning: "No Liquor of any kind will be allowed to be sold there on the day of the sale."
In the 1830s, country auctions were often fueled by free-flowing whiskey to loosen purses.
William Beidler was bucking the trend—making this a fantastic piece of early American temperance-era social history!
The inventory reads like a museum exhibit of early Americana. Notable items slated for auction include:
An Eight-Day Clock, Bureau, and Corner Cupboard
Vinegar by the Barrel
One Pair of Millstones and Mill Cogs (Indicating a local milling history!)
A Set of Smith Tools (Blacksmithing history)
Horses, "Horse gears," Milk Cows, Swine, and "Household Furniture Too Numerous to Mention."
Authentic, hand-penned 19th-century manuscript / broadside notice.
Origin: Robeson Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (William Beidler estate).
Dimensions: 8" x 6.25" — A perfect, manageable size for framing.
Condition: Beautifully aged patina, crisp handwriting, and excellent folk art appeal.
Framing Note: Comes unframed. We highly recommend using archival, acid-free museum materials when framing to protect and preserve this 180+ year-old piece of Pennsylvania heritage.
Whether you are a dedicated collector of Pennsylvania Americana, a Berks County local historian, or someone who loves unique folk art conversations pieces, this manuscript offers incredible display value. It speaks volumes about the economy, community, and culture of 1830s Pennsylvania.
Don't let this unique piece of local history slip away into another private collection!
