Dating to the 1700s, the pediment features a high relief carving of a cherub. The face of the curly-haired putto greatly protrudes from the rest of the motifs, which include a pair of highly detailed wings spread below, and two foliate rinceaux near the base of the pediment. A thin triangular molding enfolds the rest of the carvings, mirroring the overall shape of the piece. Although cherubs are associated with religious iconography, during the Baroque age (this is a period carving), European woodworkers were inspired by religious movements of the time, and often incorporated such imagery into furniture, architecture, and artwork.
