On offer is a beautiful vintage Mid-Century Modern, Murano Sommerso "Geode" Art Glass Bowl. It was crafted in Murano, Italy, and is heavily attributed to the iconic designer Flavio Poli for Murano’s renowned furnace Seguso Vetri d’Arte. These typically date to the 1950s or 1960s.
"Sommerso," meaning submerged in Italian, involves layering different colors of molten glass without allowing them to mix. In this case, the vibrant yellow core is perfectly suspended inside contrasting white, black and emerald green outer layers.
Like most true mid-century Murano pieces, this bowl features thick, heavy walls designed to brilliantly refract natural light. Glassware of this style is called a "geode" bowl because it features a perfectly flat, wide, diamond-polished rim that cuts through the color layers, mimicking a sliced geological geode stone.
Historically, such pieces were used as heavy ashtrays, but today they are highly sought-after collector's items utilized as catch-alls, jewelry dishes or standalone sculptural centerpieces.
