On offer is an original 1920s Watkins "Egyptian Bouquet" Talcum Powder tin manufactured by The J.R. Watkins Company based in Winona, Minnesota. This specific tin was introduced around 1922. Its release perfectly aligned with the global fascination with ancient Egypt sparked by Howard Carter’s discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb that same year. Cosmetics and hygiene brands heavily adopted Egyptian themes to make their products seem exotic, luxurious and timeless.
The container features highly detailed, vibrant stone-lithographed artwork across its sides. The front features the Great Sphinx of Giza framed by an ornate Egyptian revival arch and columns. The back shows an individual riding a camel past the Great Pyramid. On one side is a "Scene on the Nile," featuring a traditional sailboat, or felucca, and palm trees. The fourth and final side of the tin depicts a "Mosque at Cairo" showing traditional Islamic architecture with a large golden dome and a tall, slender minaret tower. At the very bottom, it reads "Mosque at Cairo" inside the decorative scroll. Near the top, it clearly displays the original product volume: "NET WT. 3 OZS."
The container is a rectangular metal tin featuring a rotating shaker-style cap at the top, which allowed users to sift the powder onto their hands or body. A prominent vertical metal seam runs directly down the center of this side, showing how the flat, lithographed sheet metal was rolled and stamped together in the 1920s.
The J.R. Watkins Company was founded in 1868 and became famous for its door-to-door direct sales model, utilizing "Watkins Men" who traveled by horse and wagon to sell remedies, spices, and toilet articles directly to rural and suburban homes. Because this design is so beloved, Watkins released a replica reproduction of this exact tin in the early 2000s for a line of non-talc dusting powder. The natural aging, patina and distinct wear patterns of this tin point to it being an original 1920s antique piece rather than the modern reissue.
