The lid depicts a popular, romanticized 18th-century European parlor game. The text "COLIN-MAILLARD" engraved at the top of the central medallion translates to "Blind Man's Buff" (or Bluff) in French. A blindfolded young gentleman is trying to catch the young women who are teasingly dancing and moving around him.
This game scene is framed by a delicate laurel-leaf border and bordered by repeating foliate framing lines. The front and sides of the box feature highly ornate Rococo-style scrollwork, symmetrical floral patterns, and acanthus leaf paneling.
The front panel includes a small keyhole, meaning it originally locked with a tiny key. The interior features a small built-in ledge near the lock mechanisms.
This box is silver-plated over copper. Typical of surviving pieces of this era, minor polishing wear or deep scuffs may start to reveal a faint warm copper hue underneath, adding to its genuine antique patina.
