On offer is an exceptional, authentic Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo (Coptic) processional blessing cross, intricately carved from a single piece of wood. Items like this are historically carried by priests during liturgical processions, festivals like Timkat (Epiphany), or used for personal blessing.
The piece features a distinct two-sided layout that tells a theological story of sin, redemption and salvation through its imagery. The carving uses a specific vertical timeline format, typical of traditional Ethiopian narrative art, contrasting the Old Covenant’s Fall of Man” with the New Covenant’s Salvation through Christ.
On Side 1, The Fall and Redemption are represented. The top panel depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Eve is shown picking the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge while the Serpent coils around the branches above them. Adam is seated to the right, gesturing as they succumb to temptation. A tightly braided, carved pattern representing a stylized Tree of Life or the unbreakable bond of faith leads to the lower square depicting The Messenger, a stylized, wide-eyed archangel (likely Gabriel or Michael) with cross-hatched wings, acting as a divine guardian.
On Side 2: Incarnation and Sovereignty are represented. On the top, the Madonna and Child (Theotokos / St. Mary holding the infant Jesus) are flanked by two smaller figures, likely angels or saints, with hands raised in veneration. Mary’s cloak is detailed with a field of small crosses, symbolizing her holiness. The lower square, presents Christ the King by featuring a powerful bust of Jesus Christ giving a traditional two-fingered sign of blessing with His right hand, while His left hand rests near His chest. He wears a heavy, patterned robe covered in crosses, a classic representation of Pantocrator, the Ruler of All.
The visual style is distinctly Ethiopian/East African Christian art. The oversized, almond-shaped eyes are the most defining feature of Ethiopian iconography, intended to emphasize spiritual clarity and the all-seeing nature of the divine. The background fields are filled with incredibly precise interlocking cross-hatches, chevrons, and triangular patterns. This technique mirrors the intricate basketry, textile weaving, and illuminated manuscript illumination styles prominent in historic regions like Lalibela and Tigray. The small diamond projection at the very bottom is stylized to serve as a locking tab or decorative anchor where the cross could historically be mounted onto a long wooden carrying pole for outdoor processions.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
