This is a charming late 19th-century Tramp Art jewelry or keepsake box, handcrafted from layered and chip-carved wood. The box features the distinctive geometric, notched carving associated with Tramp Art folk craftsmanship, creating a richly textured architectural appearance. Decorative fabric panels with floral motifs are inset on the lid and sides, adding a soft contrast to the deeply carved woodwork. The date on the top is 1864.
The lid retains an ornate brass handle and decorative escutcheon, while the interior is lined in vibrant red velvet, originally intended to protect treasured keepsakes, jewelry, or personal mementos. The intricate hand-carved construction, stepped corners, and warm patina showcase the skill and creativity of its maker.
A wonderful example of American folk art, this decorative box offers both functional storage and strong visual appeal for collectors of Tramp Art, Americana, or Victorian-era decorative objects.
