Authentic 1840s Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by renowned Edo-period master Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861). This dramatic composition depicts Aihara Yesuke Munefusa with his sword raised in both hands, charging over a fallen screen while pipes and various objects scatter through the air, capturing the energy and movement for which Kuniyoshi’s warrior prints are celebrated.
This print comes from the famous series “Stories of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Samurai” (Seichu Gishi Den). The title is presented in a red oblong cartouche with a convex upper edge and concave lower edge, while a biographical text by Ippitsuan appears along the upper portion of the print.
Kuniyoshi is regarded as one of the greatest Japanese woodblock artists of the 19th century, highly sought after by collectors worldwide for his dynamic samurai imagery and masterful compositions.
