Offered is a hand decorated Peruvian ceramic vase made at the Chulucanos studio in Peru and signed "Luis Salas - … Read more Offered is a hand decorated Peruvian ceramic vase made at the Chulucanos studio in Peru and signed "Luis Salas - 2003". Some refer to this as Art Deco, but Peru has numerous ancient cultures for inspiration and this pattern is reminiscent of many of their textiles. Salas used the ancient technique of negative decoration (or negative painting), a specialized resist-dye technique where the background is colored or darkened, leaving the unpainted areas to form the primary, light-colored design. Think of batik textile, where the design happens around the protected wax layers, emerging from dark to light as layers are peeled away. The finish is buttery matte, subtle sheen and no shine.
