This striking sculptural bent‑ply armchair is an exceptional example of the organic, fluid forms that defined American plywood innovation in the 1950s and 1960s. Though unmarked, the chair clearly draws from the celebrated lineage of Norman Cherner’s Pretzel Chair, a design originally produced by Plycraft, the Massachusetts manufacturer that mastered complex bent‑ply construction.
The chair also resonates with the work of George Mulhauser, whose designs for Plycraft explored similar sinuous silhouettes, laminated curves, and ergonomic shell forms. Mulhauser’s oeuvre—often derivative of Cherner’s breakthroughs—likewise relied on Plycraft’s proprietary bending techniques, which allowed for dramatic, continuous forms that were structurally sound yet visually weightless.
The bent plywood frame with sweeping, uninterrupted curves is characteristic of Plycraft’s mid‑century production capabilities. The chair’s organic Modern silhouette, balances sculptural presence with functional comfort. The interplay of warm wood grain and the dark, lacquered seat/back evokes the tension between craft and industrial process. The elegant rear leg/arm integration, is influenced by Norman Cherner’s Pretzel Chair, where structural necessity becomes a design flourish.
20″ Wide x 21″ Deep x 30″ High
24″ Arm Height
This chair is unmarked, most likely 1950’s – 1960’s. Layered, sculpted wood ply forms the body while the seat and back are padded and covered in sleek black vinyl fabric. The maker is unknown but the quality and appeal is unmistakable.
