When the horrors of the Spanish Civil War were revived on an even greater scale with the start of the Second World War, no civilian was more profoundly shaken than Picasso, as a Spaniard, and as an artist. This was no time for "voluptuous death", but an apocalypse of bloody annihilation, which banished all hope of happiness or peaceful existence. Impelled to express in painting his horror at this cataclysm and tragedy, Picasso chose skeletons, skulls, etc. as symbols of his hatred and his anguish. His most tortured figures also date from this period.
