These braided reinforcements were traditionally used to strengthen the vertical staves for carrying tools, or harvested goods, and they remain one of the clearest indicators of authentic field‑use construction.

The basket features a tight, even weave with natural tonal variation and a darker mid‑band that adds subtle visual rhythm. One side shows slightly deeper patina — a characteristic commonly seen in authentic field‑use baskets. This directional aging occurs when the darker side rests against the body during carrying, while the outer side lightens from sun exposure. It’s a desirable marker of true functional heritage and adds to the basket’s authenticity.

Its generous scale and tapered form give it a sculptural presence that reads as both functional and decorative — the kind of piece designers reach for when layering organic texture into coastal, wabi‑sabi, or collected interiors. Whether styled with shells, branches, textiles, or left beautifully minimal, it brings warmth, craftsmanship, and a sense of global history to any space.

Condition:
Excellent vintage condition with light, desirable patina consistent with age and handwoven construction.

The bottom square base measures 7.25" x 7.25".
The basket gradually increases in width until it reaches 18" wide at the top.
